Not Good At All But NotThat Bad

- Review of “Mortdecai”

       Although as is well known, it is absolutelynot conducive to the watching experience that read the film reviews beforewatching the film, the overwhelming negative comments of Johnny Depp’s latestfilm “Mortdecai” still influenced me inevitably. What worse, when I decide tohold Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany’s field in any case, but in the pincer attacksof “The Fast and the Furious 7” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service”, I could noteven find this film in cinemas at Zhuhai only after two days it released inmainland China. So it seemed that whatever the film was good or bad, it wouldnot be even had a chance to get a good turn over on box office.

       Back to the film itself, if the story wasnot that outdated and insipid, audiences would never treat Johnny Depp likethat even though they had already done the similar things before. Actually thistime, Depp was trying his best to create a character who he thought is easierto accept than his other failed experiences because everybody loves CaptainJack Sparrow. This was reflected on his performances. The cast of this film isalso effective and at the normal level. As a comedy, it did make people laughsomehow but when people walk out from the cinema, they probably already forgotthe plots or lines that make them laugh. There was no any point that audienceswould like to remember after a week. “Oh! Have I ever watched this film before?”

       But when everybody were judging and roastinghow Johnny Depp fell again, nobody paid any attention on the clothes and sceneswhich could be seen were well prepared for a retro, artistic and aristocraticsetting. Maybe it seemed quiet weird that dressing up like a fancy Britishmilord at Los Angele, but it can also be a punch line. The most important partis that this film did finish its job, to make people laugh for a while. Itwould be pathetic that nobody can understand the way that theatres, especiallycomedy use to taunt the pedantic and useless nobles. If people treat this filmas an ordinary funny comedy film but not a “Great Johnny Depp Film”, it was notthat bad. 

       Maybe the public was holding their expectedvalue for Depp to high, but Depp does need a better film to fulfill his fans expectation.“Mortdecai” might be rubbish for him but media was too tied up at him. Hope hecan survive this time and probably it will not be worse than this time.
